PREFACE: Memories of days gone by describe the essence of our lives. The joys of family life, the satisfaction of work well done, the recollection of friendships from the past, and the countless happenings that fill our lives from day to day—all of these make up our storehouse of memories.
To recapture these memories in the life of Cliff Clark is the purpose of this book, so that his family and friends can share, in his own words, the story of his life.
Never Close the Door
You learn a lot from your mistakes. Once I had an argument with a man about a difference of about $3.50 on an order for carrots. He wouldn't budge on this and neither would I. Finally I just said to him, "Pay me for the carrots and never come in our door again. "Later on this man became a buyer for a chainstore, and for twenty or thirty years we got no business from him. From this I learned that it just doesn't pay to close the door on someone over a trivial difference. So I tried to teach my sons that they should never close the door to business over a small difference between them and a customer.
