William Leggett was born on the 7 September 1807 to James and Susanna Bensling in Fritton, Norfolk, England. He was christened on 13 September 1807 and the record in Fritton states he was illegitimate when he was born. However, his parents were married on 21 September 1807. William was the oldest child and was brought up in religious home.
When he was thirty years old he married Sarah Howes on 25 September 1837 in Gorleston, Suffolk, England. William moved his family to Lowesoft in 1852 and soon afterwards heard the message from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from Father Samuel Neslen. He was baptized on 13 December 1852. After Susan's pleading to come to Utah, he sent her in April 1861. Then he sent his next daughter, Sarah, in June 1863. His wife, Sarah and three other children left England in June 1864. After earning more money, William said good-by to his elderly father and two sisters and sailed for America in April 1865.
He drove a team of oxen across the plains to Utah and was united with his family. William became the chief gardener for Brigham Young for twelve years and worked his farm located on State road. He was known in his family to have a devoted, indulgent, cheerful and happy disposition. He was honest and always had a kind word and act for others. He was a strict observer of the Sabbath Day and was patient in trying circumstances. On 26 January 1892 at the age of 84 he passed away and is buried in the Salt Lake City cemetery. He was the father ten children.
