Barrett Bass Clark was born 9 February 1814 probably in Trumbull County, Ohio. He served with is father and brother in the Black Hawk War as a private in Captain Holder Sisson's Company. He bought a portion of the home place northeast of Plainfield, Illinois in 1835. The next year he bought two village lots in Lockport, Illinois. In 1839 he bought a lot in Joliet, Illinois. He married Harriet M. Bartlett on 16 December 1838.

In 1850 Barrett went across the plains to California. At Sacramento City he engaged to furnish and superintend teams on the levee for $55 a day. Later, he purchased a stock of provisions and went back into the mining districts to engage in trade. In 1852 he returned to Illinois with his considerable earnings. He resumed farming and continued to accumulate real estate. In 1868 he moved to Lockport where he entered the dry goods and clothing business. Barrett died intestate, leaving property totaling 315 acres, all in Will County.
